What keeps basement water out?
The key pieces are surface drainage, foundation drainage, a working sump pump, a clear discharge line, and backup protection. If any one part fails, water can collect around the foundation or rise in the sump basin faster than the pump can remove it. Gutters, downspouts, grading, and discharge location matter too.
How does a sump pump fit into the system?
The sump pump removes water that enters the sump basin from drain tile or groundwater collection. When the water level rises, the float switch turns the pump on and sends water through the discharge pipe away from the home.
How often should a sump pump be checked?
At minimum, test the pump before spring thaw and before heavy storm season. Pour water into the basin, confirm the pump turns on, listen for unusual noise, and verify that the discharge line is moving water away from the house.
